President's Note

I am looking forward to sharing with you another excellent Design With Nature Conference on Saturday the 25th. Our feelings of excitement in looking forward to this conference must be similar to what the native ephemerals feel as the daylight increases each spring....like a tingling in our roots.

Conference Tickets Still Available

If you have not registered, go to the website DesignWithNatureConference.Org really soon.

Volunteers Needed
We can still use a few volunteers for short times during the day at the Conference.
Call Bill at 612-722-4172 or email Sydney at jscampbell2000@yahoo.com to volunteer.

Spring Plant Sale
Our spring Minnesota Native Plant Sale has been scheduled for May 20th, with an order deadline of May 7th.

Many other groups/schools have plant sales but to be sure you are acquiring natives of our area, buy from the Wild Ones Twin Cities plant sale. Order forms will be available shortly on the WildOnesTwinCities.Org web site and, of course, at our meetings this spring.

See you at the conference.

Uncommon Facts About Common Birds

Stan Tekiela, naturalist, wildlife photographer and writer, has traveled the continent studying the natural world of plants and animals. He will raise the question of why some birds flourish while others do not, even as they rely on the same food and habitat. Stan points out that, even with all the science known to mankind, the natural world and survival of species is still a great mystery. The effects of disturbance by development and climate are complex, as is our acceptance of what the natural world was yesterday, what it is today, and what the future might hold.

Stan Tekiela
Naturalist, Wildlife Photographer and Writer
Stan Tekiela is the originator of the popular state-specific field guides such as Birds of (state name) Field Guide, Wildflowers of (state name), and Trees of (state name). Over the past two decades Stan has authored more than 100 field guides, nature appreciation books and wildlife audio CDs for nearly every state in the nation, presenting many species of birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians, trees, wildflowers and cacti. He is also a well-known columnist and radio personality, his syndicated column appears in over 20 newspapers and his wildlife programs are broadcast on a number of Midwest radio stations.

Breaking the Rules: Ecological Design for the Real World

Anyone interested in using native plants must do more than simply expand the conventional landscape design palette. The goals and scale of native landscapes require design, implementation, and management strategies diametrically opposed to traditional horticultural practices. With over thirty years of experience in the creation of native landscapes, Larry Weaner will move beyond buzzwords and oversimplifications about native plants to examine practical, concrete processes for creating easily managed landscapes that combine ecological diversity, cultural expression, and the traditions of garden design.
