GROWING and GATHERING NATIVE EDIBLE PLANTS

Wesley Nugteren,
Seeking the Wild Naturalist

Have you ever wandered through the woods and wondered "can I eat that"?  Have you ever been curious which plants are native to Minnesota?  The fact is that many of our Minnesota plants are not only edible but also quite delicious.  Wesley will give a few good reasons to consider these plants in the urban and suburban landscape.  We'll discuss the ethics and laws of wild harvesting, growing native plants as a means of species conservation, and how to start growing these tasty and beautiful plants in your own backyard.

Wesley Nugteren is a professional naturalist, aspiring craftsperson, and lifelong wanderer.  He grew up on a South Dakota farm and takes pride in the soil-stained crevices of his fingertips. He believes in teaching a respect for nature that is born in love rather than fear.  This means smelling the earth, touching the plants, and mindfully stepping off trail to take a closer look.  Wesley is a naturalist at Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden and Bird Sanctuary and recently started offering private naturalist services through Seeking the Wild.

Dwindling Numbers for an Iconic Butterfly:
A Conservation Biologist Ponders Moving Beyond Documentation of Monarch Declines

Karen S. Oberhauser, Ph.D.

Professor in the Dept. of Fisheries, Wildlife and Conservation Biology, University of Minnesota and Chair of the Monarch Joint Venture

Karen will describe the amazing biology of migratory monarch populations, and the work of citizens and scientists in documenting monarch numbers at all stages of their migratory cycle. She’ll then discuss threats to monarchs, and potential responses to these threats. Because conservation biology must be, at its essence, a science of hope, her focus is on positive changes as well as on the challenges.

Dr. Oberhauser's books will be available for sale and signing at the meeting.

Vicki Bonk, Lake Nokomis Naturescape Stewardship Leader, and Nancy Schumacher, owner of Vagary Nursery, recently gave a Milkweed for Monarchs Workshop and will share handouts and native milkweed seeds.

Working For Water
Speaker: Peggy Knapp, Freshwater Society
Non-point source pollution is the single greatest threat to the health of Minnesota’s waters. Everything on city streets flows to our water- bacteria, salt, litter, sediment, fertilizer. Increasingly large volumes of polluted runoff reach our lakes and rivers faster, carrying ever larger pollutant loads, and causing flooding downstream. Reducing urban runoff is a watershed-scale problem that requires a whole-community effort.  In 2012, the Freshwater Society partnered with Minnehaha Creek Watershed District to launch the Master Water Stewards program. Funded by a Clean Water Grant, the Master Water Stewards program recruits, educates and certifies community leaders who work to increase water infiltration on private properties an educate neighbors about practices, and decisions that reduce runoff.  In this presentation, Peggy Knapp will lead an exploration of a variety of ways we can all work for water.

Peggy Knapp is the Director of Programs at the Freshwater Society, where she oversees civic engagement initiatives, including the Master Water Stewards program.

Where Have All The Flowers Gone?!
Speaker: Bonnie Harper-Lore

A song written by Pete Seeger in 1955, was recorded by The Kingston Trio, Peter, Paul and Mary, Joan Baez and so many others. In 2010, the New Statesman listed it as one of the Top 20 Political Songs. (Wiki) This was a thought on our minds in the 1970’s when Minnesota’s wildflower movement was in motion! Although no one intended to become political over it, that happened too. A lot has happened both in Minnesota and the Midwest to protect and restore native wildflowers since then. Bonnie will present a timeline filled with photos and sidebars of what she has seen happen. Lots of Minnesotans have worked hard and long to establish us as one of the leaders in the Country.

Bonnie Harper-Lore is a life-long conservationist, educator and author.

Speaker: Shelley Larson, Hayland Woods Native Nursery
Nurseryhttp://haylandwoods.com/

“Nothing grows under my pine trees”  “Grass won’t grow on my shoreline” Explore the use of native plants adapted to areas that can be too shady or wet for many cultivars. Deep rooted natives can stabilize shores and fill those bare spots, provide color and texture, and offer habitat for birds, butterflies, and pollinators.

Gardening at the Water's Edge
Speaker: Samuel Geer, reGen Land Design

This presentation will introduce shoreline gardening as a new approach to improving shorelines that prioritizes the importance of aesthetic beauty and the ecological benefits that are provided by plantings at the water’s edge.  By viewing shoreline spaces as gardening opportunities, it is possible to design beautiful gardens that appeal to a wide range of property owners, but also increase biodiversity, treat stormwater runoff, and prevent erosion.  The presentation will detail garden design alternatives to turfgrass or native restoration plantings that can be adapted to work with a diverse array of site conditions and owner preferences.

Samuel Geer is a landscape designer and planner who focuses on sustainable site planning and resilient landscape design.
